Srinagar, Nov 10: Jammu and Kashmir has achieved an impressive feat by successfully exporting goods valued at Rs 4,740 crore over the past four years.

As per the officials, the surge in exports is credited to the instrumental role played by Geographical Indication (GI) tags, which have substantially bolstered the handicraft industry in J&K. The strategic implementation of GI tags has proven to be a driving force behind the surge in the UT’s export prowess, elevating its unique handicrafts to new heights on the global market.

The key exported commodities encompass a diverse range, including articles of apparel, carpets, fruits, cotton, organic chemicals, cereals, and edible vegetables. Notably, handicrafts, particularly from the scenic Kashmir Valley, have emerged as the most exported items to various parts of the globe, according to data released by the Industries and Commerce Department.

The introduction of GI tags on iconic products like Pashmina shawls and carpets has played a pivotal role in reversing a previous decline in export figures.

It says that a ground breaking move in India’s trade landscape, the first QR code-based mechanism for GI certification of Kashmir Carpet has been implemented here.

Presently, 20,126 Pashmina Shawls and 9,700 carpets have received the prestigious GI labels so far.

J&K, with its rich tradition of handicrafts, has been actively pursuing measures to promote and safeguard these crafts. Ten crafts, including Pashmina, Carpet, Sozni, Walnut Wood Carving, Kashmir Papier Mache, Kani Shawl, Khatamband, Basholi Painting, Basholi Pashmina, and Chikri wood, have already been registered under the GI tag. Furthermore, 12 additional crafts, seven from Kashmir and five from Jammu are in the pipeline for GI tagging, aiming to provide them with enhanced recognition and protection.

As per the official document, Jammu and Kashmir has become the first Union Territory/State in India to issue QR-based labels for all its crafts. This innovative approach not only ensures the authenticity of the products but also contributes to the overall promotion of local craftsmanship.

It said that under the One District One Product (ODOP) and District as Export Hub (DEH) initiatives, all 20 districts in the region have been covered. Twenty-one ODOP products and over 50 DEH products have been established, with the government launching District Export Action Plans to further facilitate growth. Over 200 vendors have been onboarded on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform, fostering a conducive environment for trade.

The government’s commitment to promoting local industries is evident through its active participation in 60 national and international exhibitions, buyer-seller meets, and various events.

This concerted effort has resulted in over Rs 25 crore in sales and the generation of 11,000 leads worth Rs 320 crore, underscoring the positive impact on the region’s economic landscape, the official document said.

As Jammu and Kashmir continues to leverage GI tags and innovative initiatives, the future looks promising for the sustained growth and global recognition of its unique handicrafts.
