Srinagar, Nov 19: Army troops deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district opened fire during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday after detecting suspicious movement near the Nanak Post, triggering a large-scale search operation across the forward belt.

Official sources said alert troops noticed movement close to the LoC fence at a time when visibility was low due to fog and early winter conditions in the high-altitude area.

“Fire was opened after witnessing suspicious movement near Nanak Post. A search operation was launched immediately to rule out any infiltration attempt,” an Army source said. “So far, nobody has been recovered, and no individual has been apprehended. Searches are ongoing.”

Security officials noted that infiltration attempts typically increase during late autumn and early winter, as terror groups across the border try to push in small groups before snow blocks traditional routes. “Handlers on the other side exploit fog, darkness, and shifting weather to push infiltrators before the higher reaches close,” a senior official said, adding that forces remain on “maximum alert.”

Officials said Pakistan-based groups are attempting to revive infiltration routes in northern Kashmir, particularly in the Uri, Keran, and Gurez sectors, taking advantage of rugged terrain and frequent weather disturbances.

In response to the heightened threat, the Army has intensified surveillance with night-vision devices, advanced sensors, and increased foot patrols along vulnerable stretches. “Our deployment footprint has been recalibrated for winter. Troops are equipped for round-the-clock monitoring, and every movement along the LoC is under close watch,” sources said.

By Wednesday evening, massive searches were underway in the forests and nallahs around Nanak Post to ensure no infiltrator managed to slip through.

Officials said the area remains cordoned off, with troops scanning multiple locations due to difficult terrain and thick vegetation. “The LoC is fully secure, and any suspicious activity will be responded to firmly and immediately,” an official added.
