‘Any literary or political view should contribute to society’

Srinagar, Oct 5: A political or literary view becomes redundant if it does not contribute to the overall wellbeing and growth of the society, said CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam MY Tarigami.

He was the chief guest at the launch of a collection of short stories, ‘Shareefon Ka Mohalla’ authored by known broadcaster and writer Mohammad Hussain Zaffar.

Addressing the gathering, Tarigami said Kashmir has no dearth of talent in the art and literature. However, the CPI (M) leader stated that culture and literature help society to emerge when new ideas emerge.

“If the evolution of ideas ceases to exist, it proves to be counterproductive. We don’t always have to deliberate on what is right and what is wrong. The focus should be to have a lively society,” said Tarigami. He said literature survives when it “expresses a given reality.”

Also addressing the gathering, which included poets, writers, members of civil society and political leaders, actor and poet Bashir Dada hailed Mohammad Hussain Zaffar’s journey from broadcasting to fiction writing.

“One thing I really admired is that the author has come a long way. In this book, he has never personalised any of the stories. There is his passing reference once in a while though,” said Dada.

Popular writer and politician Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, while addressing the event, said the works of fiction by Mohammad Hussain Zaffar are quite close to reality.

“Although he has not personalised any of the writings yet each story personifies and embodies Kashmir,” said Manhas. “Poets and writers do the kind of work which historians don’t do,” Manhas added.

Trade Union leader Abdul Qayoom Wani also addressed the gathering and said the author has always stood for people of Kashmir. Wani recollected a write-up by Mohammad Zaffar Hussain , which was based on the struggle of Rehbar-e-Taleem teachers.

“His words echoed the sufferings and struggle of the ReT teachers back then,” said Wani.

During the event others who addressed the audience included Bari Andrabi, Bashir Veeri and others. The author was felicitated by representatives of a number of organisations.

Veteran broadcaster Shamshad Kralwari said he was hopeful that the collection of short stories would enhance Urdu language.

Famous poet Ranjoor Tilgami said the book was quite refreshing as it begins with an easy language. He said the author has creatively woven the stories and each story is unique.
