Srinagar, Mar 8: In a stern step to address the growing menace of drug peddling and its consumption in J&K, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has opted to deployed a trained specialized sniffer dog, KYLER, with a state-of-the-art narcotics sniffing capability at strategic locations. The launch of KYLER is a major move by J&K to stem the flow of illegal drugs, particularly in the wake of growing concerns over drug abuse.

KYLER, a specially trained narcotics detection dog, would be deployed at strategic points, such as checkpoints, airports, border points, and drug-infested areas, to improve the effectiveness of search operations.

The ANTF Kashmir has recently deployed KYLER at Narkara and Nasrullahpora in Budgam, regions that have been identified as high-risk for drug activity. The move reflects ANTF’s determination to eliminate the drug menace and provide a safer, drug-free society. J&K has seen a shocking rise in drug-related offenses, with the authorities recording a steep rise in heroin and opium seizures in the last year. The law enforcement agencies have stepped up their drive against drug peddlers, resulting in several arrests and the seizure of prohibited substances. Officials, however, admit that more aggressive steps are required to tackle the cause of the crisis.

As per official statistics, a large percentage of the youth population in J&K has become a victim of drug abuse, especially heroin and cannabis. “The deployment of a trained narcotics detection dog like KYLER is a game-changer for us. These highly trained dogs can sniff out even the minutest traces of illegal drugs, making our operations more effective,” a senior officer ANTF stated. “Drug abuse is not only a challenge to law enforcement but a social problem impacting families and communities. We are determined to eradicate this scourge through the application of tough law enforcement and awareness campaigns.”The application of sniffer dogs in anti-narcotics enforcement has been highly effective globally. The deployment of KYLER is just the first step. We intend to roll out more trained canines to sensitive areas to break the chain of drug supply,” he added. With KYLER in the field and additional strategic operations on the anvil, the ANTF’s programme is likely to complement J&K’s war against drug abuse.
