Amid power crisis in Kashmir, Army’s novel initiative lights up LoC village in Baramulla

Baramulla, Nov 24: While Kashmir continues to be in a grip of power crisis and the authorities seem to be out of ideas regarding tiding over the crisis, the Army, in a groundbreaking development, in collaboration with the NGO Aseem Foundation, has successfully solar-powered Gaggar Hill village near the Line of Control (LoC) in the remote Boniyar area of Baramulla district.

The joint venture, spearheaded by the Torna Battalion under the Pir Panjal Brigade's patronage, marks a significant milestone for the residents of Gaggar Hill. Approximately 30 households have now gained access to electricity through solar lights and inverters, alleviating the persistent struggle for power in this isolated locale.

The inauguration of the project was done by the Deputy GoC Dagger Division.

Locals, overjoyed by the initiative, highlighted the perpetual challenge of inadequate electricity from the Power Development Department (PDD), adversely impacting daily life and hindering educational pursuits, particularly for students.

The project, conducted in two phases, began in 2021 when a cluster of 13 households received solar panels and batteries. The recently completed second phase extends the benefits to the entire village, making Gaggar Hill completely solar-powered.

By harnessing the vast potential of solar energy, this endeavor not only addresses the crucial need for reliable lighting but also champions environmental sustainability.

"It signifies a turning point for these remote villages, ensuring access to essential services and uninterrupted 24/7 electricity supply," an Army officer said.

The Nambardar of the village Muhammad Kalu Jinder expressed his jubilation, emphasizing the positive impact on students who have long suffered from irregular electricity supply.

"This village doesn't receive uninterrupted electricity facilities, so the inauguration of the solar power system will provide relief to the whole village with uninterrupted electricity facilities," he said. Chairman Block Development Council (BDC) Bilal Ashiq Mir extended gratitude to the Army, recognising the initiative as a major relief for the village amid frequent power cuts.

"Gaggar Hill vllage now stands as a beacon of sustainable energy, illuminating a brighter future for its inhabitants," he said.

An Army officer said the collaborative model between the military and civilian organisations exemplifies a commitment to uplift communities in challenging regions, fostering enduring progress and resilience.
