Baramulla, Aug 8: Where there is a will, there is a way. This idiom fits the staff and the head of the Government Middle School (GMS) Hamray. Despite the infrastructural gaps in majority of the government schools across Kashmir, GMS Hamray is performing exceptionally well.

With current student enrollment of 112, the school has maintained an increasing trend in the student population over the past few years.

In this school, the teaching staff does not let even the trash go to waste.

"We engage students in paintings or other activities by using plastic bags which are often left unutilised at homes. We engage students in different activities like dancing, speech competition and other activities during our morning assembly," Farah Qazi, Headmaster of the school told Greater Kashmir.

She however credits all the achievement to the team work of the teaching staff, who, she said work like a team and give their best efforts to groom students of this school.

Unlike other schools, GMS Hamray has properly maintained MDM Kitchen. The kitchen has proper tiles, store boxes and other requisite facilities which are mostly missing in other schools.

"All of us (teaching staff and headmaster) work like a team to make this school better in every possible way," Qazi said.

From a piece of paper to carton waste, the teachers at this school engage the students to make different designs or shapes out of these items. "Through this exercise, we try to assess the interest of the student in drawing and designing and groom them and do their hand holding accordingly," Farah Qazi said.

Besides providing the basic facilities to the students, GMS Hamray has added a mini swimming pool to the list. On Thursday the mini swimming pool was formally thrown open for the students in presence of the Joint Director (North Kashmir) education, Hakeem Tanveer Ahmad.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Hakeem Tanveer Ahmad said majority of the schools face infrastructural gaps but the schools like GMS Hamrey depict the positive side of the government education sector.

"I appreciate the staff of this school. Other schools should take a lead from it and work with the same zeal and zest," Ahmad said.

He said efforts must be given by teachers and heads of schools so that parents prefer government-run schools over private schools for the admissions.

" Where there is a will, there is a way. This goes fit for this school. Because here excuses are replaced by action and will to make this school look better and perform well," Joint Director said.

When asked why the same approach was missing in other schools, Hakeem Tanveer Ahmad said besides school heads it was the responsibility of the administrators to move around and assess the performance of the schools.
