AIIMS Jammu elevates anaesthesia practices with expert insights
Jammu, Oct 3: The Department of Anaesthesiology at AIIMS Vijaypur experienced a remarkable learning opportunity during the three-day visit of Dr D K Pawar and Dr Mridula Pawar, which concluded on September 25, 2024.
Dr DK Pawar is a former professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology at AIIMS Delhi and specializes in pediatric anaesthesia. Dr Mridula Pawar, is an alumnus of the second batch of GMC Jammu and retired as Professor and Head of the Department of Anaesthesia at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital.
During their visit, they engaged with the faculty, senior residents, junior residents, nursing officers and technicians of the Department of Anaesthesiology.
On the first day, a tour of various hospital areas was conducted. This was followed by an interactive session focussed on the setup and layout of the operating theatres, exploring equipment placement, workflow and operational efficiency. Additionally, an engaging session on academics and research within the department was held, a spokesperson of AIIMS said.
On the second day, anaesthesia was administered by Dr D K Pawar to a patient undergoing a superficial mastectomy, accompanied by insightful discussions. A mock drill was conducted, simulating a patient with a road traffic accident being received in the Emergency Department, with the objective of practicing and refining rapid-response procedures and interdisciplinary teamwork in emergency situations, spokesperson said. The drill also included the transfer of the patient from the Emergency Department to the operating theatre and then to the ICU.
Day three featured an interactive session focussed on the various protocols to be followed within the ICU and OT. Dr D K Pawar and Dr Mridula Pawar emphasized the importance of conducting regular scenario-based training sessions to enhance the team’s response to critical situations. They also highlighted the need for multidisciplinary team training and strict adherence to equipment maintenance protocols, the spokesperson added.
Additionally, they recommended fostering ongoing mentorship and collaboration with experienced anaesthesiologists to ensure continuous learning and support. Regular audits of the ICU and OT were encouraged to maintain adherence to the highest standards of patient safety.
Dr Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, emphasized that the knowledge acquired during the visit would serve as a strong foundation for future advancements, ensuring the highest standards of anaesthesia care and patient safety protocols at AIIMS Jammu, spokesperson said.
