Srinagar, June 2: After missing several deadlines, much-awaited Bemina flyover is set to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by June 20.

Spanning around 1 km and costing an estimated Rs 31 crore, the flyover is part of a series of five elevated corridors between Pantha Chowk and Parimpora to decongest the traffic. Once opened, the Bemina Flyover will significantly enhance vehicular movement in an area that currently experiences heavy traffic snarls at the intersection connecting Bemina.

The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department confirmed that the final surfacing and topping work is underway on the dual tube structure, which is approximately 85 meters wide. Sajad Ahmad, Chief Engineer of the Roads and Building Department (R&B), told Greater Kashmir, "By June 20, the flyover is going to be thrown open."

While the Bemina flyover is nearly ready, similar flyovers at Nowgam and Sanat Nagar junctions are still under construction.

These projects are part of a larger plan to upgrade Srinagar’s road network to better handle increasing traffic. The Bemina flyover covers a significant part of the bypass and is designed to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and increase safety for drivers.

Local residents and commuters have expressed relief and anticipation regarding the imminent opening of the flyover. For many, the construction period has been a source of significant inconvenience and frustration. "The construction has been a nightmare for us," said Zahid Mir, a local shop owner.

"The traffic jams were endless, and it affected my business as customers avoided the area due to the congestion."

Another resident said that people struggle with commuting during the construction. "I work in the city center, and getting there from Bemina was a daily challenge. The detours and the traffic added at least an hour to my travel time each day. I am hopeful that the new flyover will ease these problems,” said Abdul Ahad, a resident of Bemina.

Earlier, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri had said that both the Bemina and Sanat Nagar flyovers will be dedicated to the public by mid-2024.

"If you look at the progress on Srinagar flyovers, the pace has picked up. Authorities are closely monitoring the process, and it is hoped that Bemina and Sanat Nagar flyovers will be opened to the public by mid-2024," he earlier said.
