Accused held for circulating indecent video in Awantipora: Police

Srinagar, Dec 27: Police in Awantipora have arrested the accused involved in the circulation of an indecent video of a woman on social media and WhatsApp groups, officials said.

A police official said the incident came to light following a written complaint filed on December 26 by a concerned citizen reporting the unlawful dissemination of sexually explicit content featuring his sister.

Acting swiftly, the police registered an FIR under No. 186/2024 at Police Station Awantipora, invoking relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and other applicable laws.

Preliminary investigations confirmed the allegations, and the accused was promptly apprehended, said the official.

The police have issued an advisory to social media users, urging them to refrain from uploading or sharing explicit content, as such actions constitute a serious offense under the IT Act.

The offense carries penalties of up to seven years of imprisonment and fines amounting to ₹10 lakh.
