There are only a few politicians in Kashmir that took their politics not just as a profession, but as a personal commitment. Not many politicians who absorbed political trends beyond Kashmir, yet remained rooted to their land and tradition. A handful of politicians from Kashmir who attained a position of influence beyond Kashmir. Not many examples where a man stands in the field for decades, but never gives up. Mufti Muhammed Sayeed exemplified all this. All his life he carried a grace that was only his.

Differ with his politics, contradict his political ideas, run counter to his political affiliations, but his personality as a political leader is a matter of fact. Today, as we observe his anniversary, his absence haunts the political landscape of Kashmir. If only he would have lived to see what Kashmir witnessed after his death, how would he feel, how would he conduct, and how would he respond? On all these questions the silence is eternal -  that is the grief.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Sahib was not just a prominent politician of Jammu & Kashmir, he was a visionary leader whose influence continues to resonate in the region today. With over five decades of dedicated public service, he left a lasting legacy through his policies and his unwavering commitment to bringing hope to a region long marred by conflict and underdevelopment. Deeply attuned to the struggles of his people, Mufti Sayeed worked relentlessly to pave the way for a future of peace, reconciliation, and prosperity.

Born on January 12, 1936, in Bijbehara, Anantnag, Mufti Sayeed was drawn to politics early in life. His political journey culminated in the establishment of the Jammu & Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP), founded on the principles of peaceful change, dialogue, and development. He envisioned a future where bridges would be built between communities, seeing such efforts as essential to achieving lasting peace.

One of his hallmark initiatives was the “Healing Touch Policy,” designed to alleviate the hardships faced by those in conflict zones by reducing oppressive security measures. This policy helped restore a sense of normalcy to regions that had been battered by years of violence.

Mufti Sayeed also focused on reforming the security framework. He disbanded controversial units like the Special Task Force (STF) and Special Operations Group (SOG), and abolished the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), signaling a firm commitment to accountability and respect for human rights.

His efforts to promote peace went beyond national borders. He played a key role in reopening cross-Line of Control (LoC) routes, such as Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote, facilitating trade and family reunions. He also invited the Hurriyat Conference for dialogue, underscoring his belief in the power of talks to resolve issues.

Mufti Sayeed’s governance was marked by inclusivity. He created eight new districts, ensuring government services reached remote areas. His policies focused on equitable resource distribution, with a particular emphasis on supporting marginalized groups and fostering regional development.

After the devastating 2014 floods, Mufti Sayeed secured an ₹80,000 crore relief package for infrastructure reconstruction, leading to projects like the Jehangir Chowk flyover and the six-lane Srinagar bypass. His administration also prioritized education, helping establish institutions such as IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu, thereby expanding educational opportunities for the youth.

Under his leadership, tourism experienced remarkable growth, with initiatives like the establishment of development authorities for key tourist areas, restoration of cultural heritage sites, and financial support for local tourism stakeholders.

Internationally, Mufti Sayeed was instrumental in making Srinagar an international airport and promoting cross-LoC connectivity, which further emphasized his commitment to regional economic collaboration and stability.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Sahib’s legacy is one of resilience, compassion, and transformation. His leadership transcended political divides, focusing on healing, rebuilding, and fostering unity. His contributions continue to shape the future of Jammu & Kashmir, leaving a legacy of statesmanship that inspires generations to come.

He passed away on January 7, 2016, but his legacy endures, etched in the hearts and minds of those who continue to work toward a brighter, more prosperous future.
