Recently, I came across a touching book titled Bumpy Roads by Dr. Ibrahim Masoodi—a name that many in the medical fraternity will recognize. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Masoodi personally during our time at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) in Riyadh. He’s not just an exceptional gastroenterologist known for his clinical work but an acclaimed medical researcher and a distinguished academic voice widely respected for his contributions. His deep commitment to community service, having organized numerous free endoscopy camps in Kashmir to support early diagnosis and healthcare access in underserved regions. His compassionate approach and dedication to health education continue to inspire peers and the next generation of medical professionals. Reading Bumpy Roads was like walking alongside a friend through the winding paths of his life’s journey.

While the entire book is rich in insights, it was the first section that truly struck a chord with me. This part of the book offers a deeply personal glimpse into Dr. Masoodi’s early life in Kashmir and the simple joys of growing up in Sopore. the apple town of Kashmir also called as “chota”or small London.—his schooling, challenges, family influences, and the environment that shaped his values.

Dr. Masoodi’s vivid recollections, especially the nostalgic bus ride from Srinagar to his hometown Sopore, transported me to an unpretentious era. The affectionate letters he shares, his reflections on family and mentors, and the rich anecdotes about Kashmir’s world-famous cuisine, Wazwan, leaving a longing impression through his simple and honest storytelling.

One of the standout narratives, “A Narrow Escape,” recounts a life-threatening incident and the profound unity and compassion he experienced in its aftermath. This story, among others, underscores the book’s central themes of resilience, humanity, and the pursuit of peace.

What makes Bumpy Roads so special is how effortlessly it blends personal memoir with universal life lessons. The stories aren’t just tales from the past—they carry wisdom, humor, and inspiration.

The stories felt so genuine, especially the moments of self-doubt and perseverance. As someone who believes in the power of education to transform lives, I found myself nodding along with his experiences and reflections. His emphasis on the role of mentorship and time management in a young person’s life is admirable. He doesn’t just recount events—he draws lessons from them, offering practical wisdom in an accessible and humble tone.

Beyond the nostalgia, his professional advice and tireless dedication to promoting health education and global harmony shine through every page. This book is not only a tribute to his journey but also a beacon of hope and purpose for readers from all walks of life.
