On the 5th and Final Day of the First Session of Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah delivered a speech that resonated deeply with the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. His address during the first session of the newly reconstituted Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly was more than just a statement of governance; it was a powerful reaffirmation of the region’s political identity and its pursuit of justice.

Omar Abdullah’s speech was framed by the historic resolution passed by the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, condemning the events of August 5, 2019, when the region’s special status under Article 370 and Article 35-A was revoked by the Government of India. This was not merely a political move but a profound act of reclaiming Jammu & Kashmir’s dignity, and Omar's leadership in spearheading this resolution marked a significant milestone in the ongoing struggle for justice. As he aptly put it, “The resolution we brought forward is not a compromise—it is a legitimate effort to restore what was taken from us.” This statement encapsulated his commitment to undoing the constitutional and political wrongs that were imposed on the region, and it struck at the heart of what his government seeks to achieve: the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s full autonomy.

The significance of this resolution cannot be overstated. It represented not just a condemnation of the abrogation of special status but also the hopes and dreams of millions of people who felt betrayed by the decisions made on August 5, 2019. Omar’s statement that the resolution was crafted with care—“so that the Centre doesn’t trash it or send it to the dustbin”— demonstrated his keen political insight and his resolve to keep the momentum going for Jammu & Kashmir’s restoration. As he pointed out, the fact that this resolution was being discussed at the highest levels of Indian politics, including by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighted the importance of the message that Jammu & Kashmir had sent through its legislative body.

A defining moment in his speech was Omar Abdullah’s acknowledgment of the resilience of the people of Jammu & Kashmir, who, after years of political suffocation, had begun to find their voice again. Reflecting on the broader impact of the special status resolution, he said, “I am happy that people have found their voice and they are able to talk.” This was not just a statement of political freedom but a recognition of the emotional and psychological toll that years of uncertainty had inflicted on the region. Omar’s words were a signal of empowerment, reinforcing that his government was not just a political body but a symbol of hope for the people who had endured so much.

In his address, Omar Abdullah also expressed deep personal conviction when he spoke of the past losses faced by the region. “We have lost a lot in the last six years,” he remarked, noting how Jammu & Kashmir had seen its identity stripped away when it was downgraded to a Union Territory and its special status revoked. Yet, Omar was not content to dwell on the past. He quickly pivoted to the future, emphasising his government's resolve to secure a better future for Jammu & Kashmir despite these monumental setbacks. “Sitting in this chair, I will not let a single day go waste. I will work tirelessly for the people of J&K,” he promised. This focus on future action and governance stood in stark contrast to the passivity that many had feared would follow the 2019 changes.

Omar Abdullah’s call for inclusivity was another standout feature of his speech. In a political landscape often marred by divisiveness, he made it clear that his government would work for the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir, “regardless of their party affiliation.” His words were a clear message that the government under his leadership would be one of healing and restoration, not division. This spirit of inclusivity was pivotal, as it sought to mend the fractures that had deepened in the wake of political changes over the years.

One of the more pragmatic aspects of his address was Omar’s focus on pressing issues such as the power crisis in Jammu & Kashmir. His successful negotiation with the Centre for an additional 300 MW of electricity underscored his commitment to addressing immediate concerns of the people, demonstrating that governance, for Omar, is not just about grand speeches, but also about delivering tangible outcomes. As he said, “It is fine with me as I want to get things done that will benefit people.” This no-nonsense approach to governance was a reflection of his dedication to improving the lives of those who had placed their trust in him.

Perhaps most importantly, Omar Abdullah's address underscored his commitment to restoring Jammu & Kashmir's full statehood. “This is not the Assembly that we want… we want a full-fledged Assembly, the one promised by the Prime Minister,” he said, emphasising that the current Assembly, while historic in its agenda, was a mere stepping stone towards the restoration of the region’s full political rights. His firm stance on the restoration of statehood was a central theme in the speech and was further reinforced by his assertion that the Prime Minister had made a commitment on this matter. “I am hopeful that the process of restoration of statehood will start soon,” he added, leaving the door open for future negotiations.

In reflecting on the recent elections and government formation, Omar Abdullah expressed his pride in the fact that the people of Jammu & Kashmir had defied expectations and voted for change. “There were many who said elections would never happen. But by God’s will, the elections took place, and the Government was formed,” he said, underscoring the resilience of the electorate in exercising their democratic rights, despite the odds stacked against them.

Omar’s speech was a masterclass in balancing hope and realism. Through this speech, Omar Abdullah reaffirmed his place as a leader committed to the aspirations of the people, standing firm in his belief that Jammu & Kashmir’s rightful place in the Indian union would one day be restored.
