It is with profound sorrow that we mark the passing of Abdul Ghafoor Noorani, an esteemed intellectual and legal luminary. Having had the privilege of knowing Noorani Sahib later in his life, I was often captivated by his profound insights into the most significant events and personalities of the mid-twentieth century sub continent. His deep understanding of Kashmir and the Hindu-Muslim politics of the subcontinent was persuasive and unparalleled.

What set Noorani Sahib apart was his objective and incisive analysis, rarely found even among the most recognized experts in the field.

His remarkable memory enabled him to narrate extensive passages from his own works and those of others without referring to any text. As a practicing lawyer for much of his life, he had an exceptional ability to quote and elucidate judgments of eminent British judges, demonstrating his legal acumen and intellectual rigor.

Our conversations often delved into his time in Delhi and Kashmir, where he would frequently visit until 2018. Every meeting with him was an enriching experience, not just in content but also in the warmth and personal affection he generously shared. His departure leaves a significant void, both in our hearts and in the realm of intellectual discourse.

Noorani Sahib was a regular columnist at Frontline magazine and Dawn newspaper. He leaves behind an extensive body of work that will continue to inspire and educate future generations. These works have been published by leading Indian and international publishing houses and have gone into several reprints. Among his most significant works are:

  • A Constitutional History of Jammu and Kashmir: This book delves into the intricacies of Article 370, a provision that granted special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Noorani Sb expertly navigates through historical and political documents, shedding light on the constitutional democracy of the state and the nation. His analysis of the gradual erosion of Article 370 and the need for restoring autonomy is both critical and compelling.
  • Islam and Jihad, Prejudice versus reality: In this accessible book, Noorani Sb challenges the misconceptions about Islam, offering a balanced and informed perspective on Islamic fundamentalism. He contrasts the political misuse of Islam by fundamentalists with the progressive Muslim thinkers who grapple with modernity. His work is an essential resource for countering prejudice and misunderstanding about Islam.
  • Destruction of Hyderabad: Noorani’s account of the fall of the princely state of Hyderabad provides a forensic examination of the diplomatic exchanges and hidden histories of the time. He brings to light suppressed reports and first-hand accounts, painting a vivid picture of the communal and territorial dynamics that shaped the fate of Hyderabad. His critique of Indian nationalism’s darker aspects is both courageous and necessary.
  • The Kashmir Dispute 1947-2012: Tracing the complex history of the Kashmir conflict, this book brings together five decades of Noorani’s writings on the subject. It offers a comprehensive perspective on the political discontent and dissent in the region, and includes archival documents that are crucial to understanding the current political reality of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • As we remember and celebrate his life, we acknowledge the immense contributions he made to our understanding of history, law, and politics of Indian subcontinent. His legacy will endure, even as we mourn the loss of a remarkable mind, a scholar with a human heart and a cherished friend of Kashmir.
