‘80% of India-Bangladesh border fenced’
New Delhi, Feb 4: India has completed fencing along 3,232 km of its 4,096.7 km border with Bangladesh, with 864 km still remaining, including 174 km of non-feasible gaps due to difficult terrain, objections from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and land acquisition issues.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai shared this information in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
The government considers border fencing a crucial security measure to curb cross-border crimes, smuggling, illegal movement, and human trafficking. The government has assured Bangladesh that all security measures, including fencing, adhere to bilateral agreements and protocols between the two countries and their border forces.
India has in addition urged Bangladesh to uphold previous agreements and adopt a cooperative approach in tackling cross-border crimes. Completion of the remaining fencing faces challenges such as difficult terrain, seasonal constraints, and objections from BGB. Efforts are ongoing to resolve these issues and enhance border security.
