Srinagar, Feb 24: An 8.5-year-old child has been given a new lease on life after a successful pediatric cataract surgery at Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, Srinagar. The surgery, performed by Dr Tanushree Chatterjee, Phaco Refractive Consultant, not only restored vision but also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in pediatric eye care.

A statement issued by the hospital here said that the young patient arrived at the hospital with mild vision loss in the right eye, which had gone unnoticed for years. A detailed examination revealed a Unilateral Lamellar Congenital Cataract, a condition that, if untreated, could lead to long-term vision impairment. With meticulous preoperative planning and support from Dr. Khalid, Anesthesiologist, Dr. Chatterjee performed a high-precision phacoemulsification surgery, successfully implanting a Toric imported intraocular lens (IOL) to ensure optimal long-term vision.

Dr. Chatterjee stressed the importance of early intervention and dispelled common myths surrounding pediatric cataracts. “Cataracts in children cannot be treated with eye drops. If left untreated, they can lead to amblyopia, where the brain does not develop proper vision. Pediatric cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures, and with today’s advancements in microsurgery, children can begin seeing clearly within hours and resume normal activities within days,” she said.
