Srinagar, Feb 27: A six-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a load carrier at Rambagh area on Friday, triggering concern over rising road accidents in city’s uptown areas.

The deceased was identified as Ayat Imtiyaz, daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad of Dialgam in Anantnag district. The incident occurred near Beighpora Masjid at Rambagh when the child was crossing the road and was hit by the vehicle, resulting in critical injuries.

She was rushed to SMHS Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared her brought dead, officials said.

Confirming the incident, officials from the concerned Police Station told Greater Kashmir that a police team reached the spot immediately after the accident. “The load carrier involved in the incident has been seized and its operator has been apprehended. Further legal proceedings have been initiated and the matter is being investigated,” an official said.

The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to increasing road accidents in Srinagar’s uptown localities, particularly along busy stretches such as Rambagh and the bypass.

To mention in recent years, several fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, load carriers and two-wheelers have been reported from these areas. Many of these accidents have led to deaths of minors.

Residents have expressed concern over frequent violations of traffic norms, including overspeeding and reckless driving. They have urged the authorities to intensify enforcement, especially against heavy vehicles operating within residential zones, to prevent further loss of life.
