Srinagar, Jan 15: Police have detained six persons for allegedly making derogatory sectarian remarks during a recent event held here.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various social and religious organisations, which have called for maintaining communal harmony and refraining from divisive rhetoric.

Srinagar Police said that the detained individuals have been charged under Sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS Act and are currently lodged in Central Jail, Srinagar. The police have also issued a stern warning to the public against sharing or posting content intended to incite division or disturb public peace.

“Six miscreants have been detained for inciting sectarian unrest through derogatory remarks. We are monitoring such activities closely, and anyone found engaging in similar unlawful behavior will face strict legal action,” the police said in a post on their official X handle.

The incident came to light after a video containing inflammatory remarks surfaced on social media, prompting swift action bypolice. Late last night, police detained several individuals for questioning, with officials reiterating their commitment to take action against those who make derogatory sectarian remarks.

“Over the past few months, some individuals with malicious intentions have been engaging in sectarian slander on social media, attempting to create division. Legal action will be taken against offenders, and those sharing or forwarding such content will also face consequences,” police said.

In response to the incident, several social and religious organisations have strongly condemned the remarks, emphasising the importance of unity and harmony among all sects. They have urged the public to reject any attempts to sow discord and to report such activities to the authorities.

Prominent religious leaders have called for restraint and responsible behavior, particularly on social media platforms.

People have also urged law enforcement agencies to take strict action against those trying to inflame sectarian tensions. They highlighted the need for collective efforts to uphold communal harmony in the region.

The police, reiterated their zero-tolerance policy against any activities that disturb public peace. “We are committed to ensuring that Srinagar remains a city of peace and coexistence. Such malicious attempts to create unrest will be dealt with firmly,” police said.
