Srinagar, Jul 1: The 5th Muharram was marked by solemn Alam Shareef processions across various parts of the city as devotees gathered to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his loyal companions.

Large gatherings of mourners were witnessed at key areas, including Fateh Kadal, Hazratbal, and Lal Bazar. Dressed in black, participants marched through the streets carrying Alams, symbolic replicas of the flag borne by Hazrat Abbas (AS), the standard-bearer of Imam Hussain’s caravan. The atmosphere was one of deep sorrow and spiritual reflection, as the mourners chanted elegies and recited Marsiyas (poetic lamentations) remembering the sacrifices made in Karbala.

Each procession followed a designated route and concluded at central congregation points where religious scholars addressed the gathering. These sermons highlighted the historical and spiritual significance of Muharram, emphasising the values of sacrifice and justice.

“These processions represent our unwavering commitment to the principles of Karbala—truth, dignity, and standing up against tyranny. The willingness of participants to march on the path of Imam Hussain (AS) is a powerful expression of solidarity with his cause,” said a group of mourners. “Every year, we gather with our families and community to pay homage to Imam Hussain (AS). The lessons of Karbala are timeless and continue to inspire us.”
