5th Indoor Rowing Championship ignites passion for water sports
Srinagar, Sep 28: The 5th Indoor Rowing Championship took place at Pokhribal Water Sports Centre in Srinagar, drawing nearly 200 participants across Senior, Junior, and Sub-junior categories.
Organised by the J&K Rowing & Sculling Association with support from the J&K Sports Council, the event highlighted the rising popularity of water sports in the region.
Indoor rowing, a growing sport in India, uses rowing machines (ergos) to simulate rowing on water, offering both competitive and fitness opportunities. Gulzar Ahmad, SHO of Ranawari, emphasised the administration’s focus on upgrading sports infrastructure to support young talent.
National Coach Bilques Mir noted the event serves as a stepping stone for the National Championship, providing local athletes a chance to shine on a bigger stage. Throughout the day, the competition fostered a vibrant atmosphere, with spectators cheering on the determined athletes.
During the prize distribution, competition director Dr. Rafiq honored top performers, celebrating their dedication. Local residents praised Bilques Mir for transforming Pokhribal into a hub for healthy activities, reversing its troubled past.
With its potential as a premier water sports destination, Pokhribal could attract tourism and boost local employment. The event has set a strong foundation for the future of water sports in Srinagar, marking a new chapter in the region’s sporting culture.
