56th & 57th REAC sessions at SKUAST-K spotlight sustainable farming
Srinagar, Apr 15: The Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), convened its 56th and 57th Research and Extension Advisory Committee (REAC) meetings at the university’s main campus. The sessions aimed to align research, extension, and field needs, benefitting Jammu and Kashmir’s farming community.
Presiding over the meetings, Vice Chancellor Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai emphasized transforming traditional farming into a sustainable and commercially viable system, advocating for interdisciplinary collaboration, value chain development, and youth-driven agri-startups. He reaffirmed SKUAST-K’s vision of positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a model bio-economy state.
Prof Ganai also highlighted developments at the newly sanctioned 500-kanal Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Research Station in Sallar, Anantnag, designed to serve as a hub for innovation and farmer training in South Kashmir.
The meeting showcased leadership under Prof Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension/SAMETI, who shared achievements in adopting climate-resilient practices and leveraging field feedback to address localized challenges in seed production, pest management, and nutritional security.
A booklet on Integrated Farming Systems was released, presenting models tailored to Jammu and Kashmir’s diverse agro-climatic zones. Technical sessions addressed urgent issues, including strategic pesticide use, seed trial outcomes, and technological advancements to assist farmers.
The meetings concluded with active discussions among stakeholders from agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and allied departments, reaffirming the commitment to strengthen research-extension integration.
