Srinagar, Sep 15: The 5 km Swimathon Challenge 2024, organised by the Swim N Survive Society Kashmir in collaboration with the Underwater Sports Association of J&K, concluded successfully today. The event attracted participants aged 9 to 62, including three young girls who bravely took on the challenge, supported by their parents.

The swimathon began in three groups led by Er Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, AR Bhat, Zahid Iqbal, and Sheikh Rashid Fayaz. Starting from the Nigeen Water Sports Centre, swimmers made their way towards Mac's Island, took a long lap towards the GD Goenka side, and then returned to the starting point. The 5km distance was tracked using Garmin Fenix 7, with Mohsin Fayaz Shah acting as the key observer for the event.

Prominent businessman Aijaz Ahmad Khan of Paristaan Group, who participated alongside his son and nephew, expressed pride in completing the challenge. He described it as a unique experience, swimming alongside his son in such a significant event, and thanked the organizers and sponsors for making the day memorable.

The youngest participant, 9-year-old Sanaya Saleem, completed the challenge under the guidance of her coach and group leader, Zahid Iqbal. Her parents closely followed her progress and were proud of her achievement. Dr Javaid and Imran Sofi were equally delighted to see their two children participate in the event, while Ibrahim Khan cherished the experience of swimming alongside his father, calling it a motivational and bonding experience.

At the event's conclusion, all participants received certificates of participation and finisher gifts. The valedictory ceremony was attended by representatives from S M Constructions, along with SNSS-K President Shakeel Ahmad, renowned swimming expert Riyaz Wani, and SNSS-K Secretary Yasir Makhdoomi.

During the ceremony, the chief guests applauded the swimmers for their perseverance and dedication in completing the 5km challenge. Yasir Makhdoomi took a moment to pay tribute to the late Shahid Afzal Zadie, former president of SNSS-K, whose vision for promoting long-distance swimming among children continues to inspire the society’s efforts in nurturing young talent.

Makhdoomi also expressed sincere gratitude to S M Constructions for their invaluable support, which played a crucial role in the event's success.
