Srinagar, Aug 30: The J&K Home Department Friday ordered transfers of four Senior Superintendent of Police (SSPs) and Imtiyaz Hussain Mir has been posted as SSP Srinagar replacing Ashish Kumar Mishra.

The transfers have been ordered after the approval of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The ECI had directed the immediate transfer of SSPs in Baramulla and Kupwara, as well as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Handwara.

These districts, located in north Kashmir, are critical in the upcoming polls.

The administration was asked to submit a panel of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to fill these positions by Thursday evening, indicating the urgency of the matter.

This reshuffle comes in the wake of the poll authority’s decision to finally relieve SSP Srinagar, Mishra, who was transferred to the Delhi Police in June 2023 but had remained in Srinagar due to administrative delays.

According to the official order, Mir has been transferred and posted as the new SSP of Srinagar, replacing Mishra.

Mir, a decorated 1999 KPS officer has served crucial postings including SP Sopore, SSP Ganderbal, SSP Baramulla, SSP Control Room, and SSP Anantnag.

He was serving as SSP Terror Monitoring Group.

Zahid Malik has been appointed as SSP Baramulla, taking over from Gurinder Pal Singh, who has been posted as Director of Telecom PHQ.

Ghulam Jeelani Wani has been posted as the SSP Kupwara, succeeding Shobhit Saxena who has been posted as SSP CID Headquarters.

Ifroz Ahmad has been transferred to Handwara, where he will assume the role of SP, replacing Dawood Ayoub, who has been posted as SSP TMG CID Headquarters.

The transfer order comes on the heels of a major shakeup within the J&K Police Department earlier this month.

On August 16, a substantial reshuffle took place with 33 IPS and JKPS officers being transferred before the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was enforced, setting the stage for assembly polls.

The ECI’s decision to transfer these key Police officials is viewed as a strategic move to maintain law and order and ensure that the electoral process is conducted in a free and fair manner.

The new postings of these senior officers in crucial districts are expected to play a significant role in managing the security landscape during the election period.
