356 persons arrested under NDPS Act in 10 months in Baramulla

Baramulla, Nov 1: The Baramulla police in its efforts to eradicate the menace of drug addiction from the society has arrested 356 persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and registered 242 cases in last 10 months, reflecting the police’s commitment in the war against the drugs addiction.

An official of Baramulla police, while disclosing details, said that seven more persons have been arrested under the prevention of illicit trafficking under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act/PSA.

He said the significant stride in this battle has been the freezing of property worth a whopping Rs 2.3 crore, which include 3 residential houses, 3 vehicles, besides a substantial cash amount of Rs 1.2 crore.

“The freezing of property was initiated after following the due procedure of law,” said the police official.

While giving details of the drugs seized during the last ten months, the police official said that police has so far seized contraband including 2.67 kgs of Brown Sugar, 4.527 kgs of Heroin, 11.808 Kgs of Charas, besides 198.692 kgs of poppy straw and cannabis powder. Besides, Rs 1.13 crore cash and 31 vehicles valuing at around Rs 59.04 lakhs have been seized by the police.

“The value of the seized contraband in the international market is believed to be over Rs 3.47 crore,” said the police official. He said, “The total value of the seized property, in the current year besides the value of the contraband and the seized vehicles and cash amounts to Rs 12 crores and 68 lakhs,” he added.

The Baramulla police have taken lead in striking against the drug smugglers and had been actively involving the people from the civil society and religious leaders to fight against the drug menace. The initiative has been appreciated by the people of the Baramulla district who had pledged to assist the police in eradicating the drug menace from the society.
