3 Kashmiri Pandit houses damaged in overnight blaze in Anantnag
Srinagar, July 30: Three houses belonging to Kashmiri Pandit families were damaged in a blaze in the Mattan area of Anantnag district in south Kashmir last night.
The fire, which broke out around 2 am, was brought under control within an hour, causing significant damage to the properties. In response, the police have promptly formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite the probe into the matter.
Speaking to Greater Kashmir Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for South Kashmir, Javid Iqbal Matoo, said there will be fast track investigation to ascertain causes of fire. “We formed the SIT and we will ascertain facts very soon,” he said, assuring the public of a thorough and swift investigation.
DIG Matoo said that they have collected samples for Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) analysis and are also monitoring CCTV footage from the area. “ These measures aim to uncover any clues that might lead to the perpetrators behind the incident.”
The incident has raised concerns among the local community and the wider Kashmiri Pandit population, who have been gradually returning to the Valley in recent years. In recent months, Anantnag and other areas have witnessed several well-attended functions organised by Kashmiri Pandits, where local communities participated actively, reflecting a growing harmony.
DIG Matoo reiterated the police's commitment to maintaining this peaceful atmosphere. "We won't allow anybody to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere here in South Kashmir," he affirmed.
