Srinagar, Nov 24: The Department of Commerce, University of Kashmir (KU), on Monday began a three-day national workshop on “Mastering Data Analysis Using Microsoft Excel” at the Main Campus.

Designed to strengthen analytical competencies, the workshop focuses on mastering core data analysis skills, using Excel for informed decision-making, hands-on practice, and collaborative learning.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said, “In today’s academic and professional landscape, data literacy is no longer an additional skill; it is essential. Workshops like this help our students and professionals translate raw information into meaningful insights.”

She added that the University is committed to expanding practical, skill-oriented training across disciplines.

Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, and Dean College Development Council KU, Prof. Khursheed Butt, said that such initiatives enhance analytical capabilities among students, scholars and professionals, enabling them to apply data-driven approaches in research, administration, and industry-related tasks.

In his keynote address, Prof. Narain, Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, said that Excel remains one of the most widely used and adaptable analytical tools, adding that effective data analysis strengthens evidence-based decision-making across sectors.

Earlier, Head, Department of Commerce KU, Prof. Pervaz Ahmad Shah, in his welcome address, highlighted the department’s continued efforts to integrate practical skill-building modules into academic programmes and training activities.

The three-day workshop features intensive hands-on training sessions on data handling, analytical functions, visualisation techniques, dashboards, and problem-solving exercises. It is being attended by students, scholars and professionals from within and outside the University. The inaugural session was attended by deans of various schools, faculty members, scholars, and students of the campus.
