20-month-old baby walks after complex hip reconstruction at Ujala Cygnus
Srinagar, Dec 10: Ujala Cygnus, in partnership with Amandeep B R Medicity, made a major medical breakthrough in the treatment of a complex case of bilateral congenital hip dislocation in a 20-month-old baby girl, which was diagnosed at a late stage.
A statement of Ujala Cygnus issued here said that she underwent a complex bilateral hip reconstruction surgery, performed by pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Sayim Hassan Wani, at Amandeep B R Medicity.
It said that the surgery involved open reduction of dislocated hips, femoral shortening, and rotational osteotomy, with pelvic osteotomies on both sides, followed by a hip spica cast for around 3 months.
The statement said that the surgery was a marathon procedure that took around 8 hours on each side, done at 3 3-week interval, and involved a team of expert doctors, anesthetists, and medical staff.
It said that the hospital’s administration provided all logistical support to ensure the success of the surgery.
“We are thrilled to share that Baby has started taking her first steps after the major procedure, marking a major milestone in her recovery,” Dr Sayim said. “I want to thank everyone involved in this case, including our anaesthesia team, OT staff, and paediatrician Dr Altaf, for their dedication and expertise.”
Dr Sayim also emphasised the need for routine hip screening by USG for newborns, mostly firstborn females with breech delivery, who are at a higher risk of developing this condition, as early diagnosis leads to better outcomes in these cases.
