Srinagar, May 14: Two youth were killed in a road accident near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar.
Police said the accident occurred late Tuesday night. A police official said the motorcycle bearing registration number JK04C 5524 collided with an electric pole near TRC.
“Due to the collision with the electric pole, the duo were grievously injured and succumbed to their injuries. We have taken cognisance of the accident,” said the official.
The deceased have been identified as Gh. Muhammad Lone (25), son of Ali Mohammad, and Reyaz Ahmad Tantray (23), son of Mohammad Yousuf Tantray, both residents of Machil, Kupwara.
The accident has again brought to light the rising fatalities due to road accidents in Srinagar city. This is a major road accident this year that has led to the loss of two youth. Last year, two teenagers lost their lives in an accident at Tengpora, Srinagar. The accident shook the valley prompting traffic police to initiate massive drives against speeding, underage driving, and other issues.
A traffic police official said that they continuously carry out drives against speeding and other traffic violations.
Meanwhile, Apni Party president Syed Altaf Bukhari expressed shock and condolences over the incident.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two youngsters from Machil, Kupwara in a road accident near TRC, Srinagar, after their bike collided with an electric pole last night. Both in their early 20s succumbed in the hospital. This is a truly heartbreaking incident. My deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families, especially the parents of the deceased. May they find strength during this unimaginable time,” Bukhari said in a social media post.
