Srinagar, July 19: A counter-infiltration operation initiated on intelligence input from the Jammu and Kashmir Police led to the elimination of two terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district, the Army said on Friday.

The successful mission was a collaborative effort involving the Army, the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP).

According to Lt Col M K Sahu, defence spokesperson based in Srinagar, the operation was launched following credible intelligence received from the J&K Police on Wednesday.

This intelligence, indicating a potential infiltration attempt by foreign terrorists through the Keran sector, was corroborated by additional intelligence agencies.

“On July 18, at approximately 12:30 pm, alert troops observed the movement of two terrorists through thick foliage on our side of the LoC," Lt Col Sahu said. “The infiltrators were challenged, which prompted them to open fire, leading to a fierce gunfight. Both terrorists were killed in the exchange. The operation resulted in the recovery of weapons, war-like stores, and a Pakistani identity card.”

Lt Col Sahu emphasised the significance of this intelligence-driven operation as a testament to the close coordination and synergy between the Indian Army, BSF, and JKP. This marked the third successful anti-infiltration operation along the LoC in recent weeks.

“The Indian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining the sanctity of the Line of Control and ensuring peace in Kashmir,” Lt Col Sahu said. “This operation underscores our robust counter-infiltration posture.”

The latest operation follows a similar incident on July 14, when three foreign terrorists were killed while attempting to infiltrate through the Keran sector.

Additionally, in the last week of June, two unidentified terrorists were killed in a counter-infiltration operation at Gohalan Uri in Baramulla district. These operations highlight the ongoing efforts and readiness of Indian security forces to thwart infiltration attempts and maintain security in the region.
