Jammu, Jan 30: Security forces Tuesday stated to have averted a major tragedy by recovering and defusing two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), placed near a cremation ground in Sherpur along Bein Nullah in Hiranagar of Kathua district.
Locals stated that the explosives wrapped in polythene were first noticed by the villagers on the way to their fields, this morning.
“After noticing those suspicious packs, the villagers immediately reported the matter to BSF officials and police. The security forces rushed to the place and confirmed those packs as IEDs,” the locals said.
ASP Kathua Paramjeet Singh, while speaking to reporters, said, “The IED was hidden along Bein Nullah bridge. IED was not active. Two detonators were there and an attached battery was there. It seemed to be an old one. Besides, a circuit, screws like splinters as used by electricians were there. Presently investigations are underway. Anything about it can be said with certainty only after the investigations are wrapped up.”
Meanwhile, a police spokesperson said that early morning, during a search operation conducted by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of district police Kathua along the Bein Nullah near Shamshan ghat (cremation ground), two suspicious objects packed in polythene were discovered hidden in bushes.
“Acting promptly, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was called to inspect the objects. Upon examination, it was revealed that both items were Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Each IED was contained within a plastic bottle and consisted of components such as an electric detonator; a 9V battery (originating from Malaysia); a circuit, screws serving as splinters and explosive material. Additionally, the plastic containers encasing the IEDs were coated with Plaster of Paris,” the spokesperson in the official statement said.
According to the spokesperson, the approximate weight of one IED was determined to be 1.5 kg, while the other weighed 1 kg. “Recognizing the potential danger, both IEDs were carefully and successfully dismantled on the spot by the police team, preventing any potential harm. The device was taken into possession after a controlled detonation,” he added.
“A case was registered at the concerned Police Station and further investigation to arrest those responsible for planting IED is going on,” the spokesperson said.
