Jammu, Dec 12: Police Thursday said that two bovine smugglers were killed and one sustained injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a gorge, after breaking a Police naka and critically injuring a cop near Nud in Samba district.

One out of two bovines, being smuggled, was also killed in the accident, Police said.

“Three bovine smugglers in a speedy car broke the Police naka at Nud, critically injured a Police official and fled away from the spot on Wednesday night. After hundred meters away from the naka point, bovine smugglers lost control of the vehicle. It fell down into a gorge resulting in the death of two bovine smugglers on the spot and one injured. One bovine was also found dead,” Police said, while refuting news reports about “firing by Police on bovine smugglers.”

“News in some media groups is in circulation regarding firing by Police upon bovine smugglers at naka Nud in district Samba is totally baseless. It is not based on facts. No firing incident took place,” Police added.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Police foiled a bovine smuggling attempt and rescued 15 bovines in Udhampur district. Vehicle used for smuggling bovines was also seized.

“Team of Police Post Roundomail led by its In-charge foiled one bovine smuggling bid in which 15 bovines were rescued from vehicle, bearing registration number JK14B-1095 from Roundomail naka point,” Police said.

“The driver of the vehicle fled away from the spot after leaving behind his vehicle on road. All the 15 bovines were rescued and have been shifted to a safer place and vehicle seized. In this regard, a case FIR No 497/2024 U/S 223 (a) BNS 11 PCA, 184 M V Act was registered in Police Station Udhampur. Further investigation of the case was in progress,” Police added.
