116 People Hospitalized in Leh Due to Suspected Food Poisoning
Kargil, Aug 18: At least 116 people, mostly non-local labourers including children and middle-aged individuals, were hospitalized after suffering suspected food poisoning in Leh, Ladakh.
Reports said all the affected were labourers involved in a film shooting in Leh. A health official said the patients complained of severe abdominal pain, headache, and vomiting.
Medical Superintendent of SNM Hospital said the sudden rush created a panic-like situation as attendants crowded the emergency ward. With limited bed capacity, many patients had to be accommodated on floor bedding.
“Doctors from all departments responded swiftly and managed the situation effectively. Once stabilized, some patients were referred to Chuchot Primary Health Centre and Ladakh Heart Foundation, while others remain under observation. Many have already been discharged,” she stated.
Hospital authorities said the situation was brought under control after urgent mobilisation of staff from all departments.
“We managed the influx of patients effectively. The police also stepped in to regulate the overcrowded emergency ward and prevent panic,” a senior doctor said.
Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the source of the suspected food poisoning.
