115 kgs of heroin like substance seized in Rajouri, Poonch in 2023

Rajouri, Jan 9: In war against drugs and narcotics trade, the police in Rajouri and Poonch districts seized 115 kgs of heroin like substance besides other drugs last year.

Most of the consignment recovered is believed to be linked with cross Line of Control(LoC) smuggling and narco terror trade. 128 peddlers were arrested in 78 cases of narcotics recovery registered in the twin districts.

Drugs and narcotics smuggling has been taken as a serious challenge in Rajouri, Poonch districts, called as Pir Panjal region. The rising addiction of drugs among youth is being considered as a big social threat.

Drugs and narcotics smuggling was earlier mostly rooted from some states of country to this side. It has now taken a big turn with cross Line of Control smuggling of narcotics and posed new challenge for forces.

Cross LoC smuggling is being considered as a big threat owing to its linkage with narco terror modules. A number of such modules have been busted in areas of Rajouri and Poonch in recent years wherein members of these modules were collecting money from narcotics trade via Cross LoC smuggling and using the same to fuel terrorism.

In its action against drugs and narcotics peddling in Rajouri and Poonch district, police said to have taken the war on unprecedented front.

It informed that in the year 2023, 78 cases were registered in twin districts that include 36 FIRs in Rajouri district and 42 in Poonch. These FIRs mostly, police said, are linked with recovery of narcotics, drugs and bids to smuggle the consignments by peddlers. In these cases, police informed, a total of 128 arrests have been made that include 58 arrests in Rajouri district and 70 in Poonch district.

Police further informed that besides arrests of peddlers in smuggling cases, stern action has also been taken against notorious peddlers who have been detained under PITS NDPS which is a form of PSA for drug peddlers. Sharing details, police also informed that among recovery of drugs and narcotics in cases, the main recovery is of heroin as 115 kgs of heroin worth hundreds of crores has been seized by police.

Among the recovery of drugs, police informed, 85 kgs of heroine has been seized in Poonch district and 30 kgs in Rajouri district.

Many consignment of heroine in several kilograms and properly packed in packets have been recovered in areas on Line of Control as forces foiled bids of cross LoC smuggling of these consignments.

"This is not just action against drugs and narcotics trade but it is a war against it," Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rajouri Poonch range, Dr Haseeb Mughal. He said that the figures of action against peddlers in Rajouri, Poonch districts last year is a testimony of the unprecedented legal action being taken against the drug peddlers.

DIG RP range also said hundreds of awareness programmes have also been held at education institutions and other public places besides debates and seminars." Our fight against drugs will continue with all might but we also appeal help and cooperation of our society and all stake holders to eradicate this menace from society and to help us save young generation."the police officer said who added that police is grateful to the people of region who are coming forward and helping police with timely inputs.
