10th day of Muharram: Comprehensive security, traffic arrangements ensured peaceful processions: IGP Kashmir
Srinagar, Jul 6: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi, on Sunday said that elaborate security and logistic arrangements were made by the Jammu and Kashmir Police to ensure the peaceful and uninterrupted conduct of Zuljanah processions across the Valley on the solemn occasion of Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to Botakadal in Srinagar, the traditional starting point of the Ashura Zuljanah procession, IGP Birdi said that the police, in coordination with other civil departments, had worked meticulously to facilitate both the mourning processions and regular civic movement in and around the city.
“The Srinagar Police have made elaborate arrangements for the peaceful observance of Youm-e-Ashura. Special care has been taken to ensure that there is no disruption in the religious events, while also keeping traffic flow smooth and regulated,” IGP Birdi who was flanked by SSP Srinagar Dr G V Sundeep Chakraborty said .
He highlighted that multiple traffic diversions were put in place well in advance, with dedicated personnel deployed at critical junctions and regulation points to guide vehicles and pedestrians alike. “Traffic Police have worked in tandem with district administration to minimise inconvenience to the general public while giving due reverence and space to the Ashura mourners,” he added.
The IGP noted that the police had ensured coordination across different zones of the city, with clear lines of communication established to handle any emerging situation swiftly. “Our focus has been on facilitating religious freedom, ensuring public safety, and maintaining law and order throughout the Valley, especially in sensitive areas where large gatherings were expected,” he said.
