1 injured in old mortar shell explosion in Samba

Jammu, Mar 12: One person Tuesday sustained critical injuries in an explosion of an old mortar shell in Chandli village of Samba district.

Police said, “This morning we received information that a man, identified as Chinar Singh, son of Puran Singh, a resident of Chandli village, sustained critical injuries in an explosion of mortar shell. We immediately rushed him to the District Hospital, Samba. Preliminary investigations suggested that this was an old mortar shell, which exploded.”

“How this person came into contact with this mortar shell – would be investigated. Our first priority was to save the injured. After initial treatment, when his condition stabilised, he was referred to Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu for specialised treatment. Further investigation, in this case, has been sent into motion,” police added.

At Samba District Hospital, the doctors, treating him, told the media that the man had sustained multiple splinter injuries, causing damage to his right leg. “He was brought here in critical condition. Fortunately, all senior doctors were here which helped in stabilising his condition, following which he was sent to GMC hospital, Jammu,” they informed.

A couple of months ago, in a similar incident, one person had died while another sustained injuries, in a mortar-shell explosion in the same area.
