A complete shutdown was observed on Tuesday in Palhalan and Brath Kalan areas of Sopore in Baramulla district to mourn the killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen militants by government forces on Monday.

All shops and other business establishments remained shut and traffic was by and large off the roads.

The militants, identified as Ashiq Ahmad Bhat of Palhalan Pattan and Toib Majeed Mir of Brath Kalan, Sopore, were killed in a gunfight with forces in Zachaldara, Handwara area of Kupwara district.

Thousands of people participated in the funeral of the militants last night.

A witness said that Toib’s body was carried by mourners from his home to a local ground where his funeral prayers were held at his ancestral village of Brath Kalan.

Toib had joined militants ranks in 2016. 

In Palhalan, people assembled in large numbers to attend funeral prayers of Ashiq Ahmad Bhat.
