The divisional administration Kashmir issued a weather advisory on Thursday which said that moderate to heavy snowfall is expected at most places in the state from December 11 to December 13.

The advisory read that a western disturbance is approaching J&K and adjoining areas and is likely to affect the state from 9 December onwards and produce moderate to heavy snowfall on 11, 12 and 13 December. It asked deputy commissioners of Kashmir division to take all precautionary measures in their districts.

“It is enjoined upon all deputy commissioners, all concerned heads of departments and district superintendents of police to activate their manpower and machinery and to be in a state of preparedness to minimise disruption of essential services, restore road connectivity at the earliest, restore electricity and water supply and healthcare services etc.,” the advisory read.

According to divisional commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan, the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road shall remain closed for vehicular traffic from December 10 until further notice in view of the snowfall in higher reaches and slippery road condition on either side of Zojila Pass.

Khan directed the mechanical engineering department to be fully prepared for timely clearance of snow.

Meanwhile, the police said that it has established help-lines in various districts of Kashmir division for people to seek help during any emergency due to snowfall and rains.

Inspector general of police Munir Ahmad Khan directed all the concerned district police chiefs to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, the traffic on Sonamarg-Minimarg stretch of Srinagar-Leh highway was restored partially on Thursday evening after being suspended due to slippery road conditions and fresh snowfall in Zojila and Sonamarg areas last night.
