Panic gripped Domana area in Jammu city outskirts on Tuesday when suspected militants reportedly fired at an army camp.

“Around 4.30 a.m two motorcycle-borne gunmen opened fire at the army camp. Sentry on duty responded timely to initial fire by suspected militants and averted a possible attack on the unit,” an official said.

He said suspected militants tried to force their entry into the unit and fired two gun-shots at a post on main gate but sentry retaliated timely and fired 8-10 rounds, after which the suspects fled away.

Following the brief exchange of fire, an alert was sounded for all the security installations and army choppers were pressed into service to illuminate the entire garrison area.

“The choppers kept hovering in the sky for over 30 minutes to illuminate the surrounding areas. Soldiers conducted door to door searches of the adjoining area to nab the assailants,” the official added.

Despite repeated attempts, PRO Defence did not pick up the phone for his comments on the incident.
