With both the government and the police under fire over rising incidents of braid-chopping across Kashmir, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday claimed that such incidents were “attempts to create a mass hysteria and undermine the dignity of women in the state.”

She said that the government will take steps to “find the motives behind the braid chopping attacks.”

“Braid chopping incidents are attempts to create mass hysteria and undermine the dignity of the women in the state,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter.

Mehbooba’s remarks come amid a massive public outcry and protests over ‘growing’ incidents of braid-chopping across Kashmir. Police have specifically come under sharp criticism for failing to crack the case despite admitting that at least 100 incidents of braid-cutting have taken place in Kashmir the past few weeks.

Apart from the general public, the joint separatist leadership in Kashmir has slammed the government and its agencies for attacking the dignity of women and failing to nab the culprits. The leadership had called for a protest march to TRC grounds here on October 14, but postponed it later. Also, a shutdown called by the joint leadership on October 9 evoked a complete response across the Valley.

No arrests have been made even after passage of one month. Police continue to maintain that they have formed special investigation teams and offered a reward of Rs six lakh for information leading to arrest of the culprits.
