Forces went berserk after being pelted with stones, say locals

Five persons were injured, one of them with bullet, during clashes in Hajin area of Bandipora district after an army patrolling party was pelted with stones on Wednesday.

A witness said that a youth was hit by a bullet on his right ankle after soldiers allegedly went berserk in the area after being pelted with stones. He said that as the soldiers went berserk, locals hit streets and clashed with forces personnel who fired dozens of teargas shells and pellets to disperse them.

“Four youth were hit by pellets while one youth was hit by a bullet in his ankle. The injured were shifted to community health center, Hajin,” he said.

A doctor posted in CHC Hajin said that they received five injured youth. One of them was identified as Nayeem Ahmad Mir who was hit by a bullet in his right ankle, he said.

“He was referred to the bone and joint hospital Barzulla in Srinagar for specialised treatment. Four pellet injured were treated at the CHC,” the doctor said.

Locals alleged that army’s 13 RR unit went berserk, ransacked several residential houses and set fire to stacks of dried grass in Parrey Mohalla, Bon Mohalla, Banger Mohalla and Khos Mohalla localities of Hajin.

The local residents later held a protest demonstration and chanted pro-freedom slogans. They also demanded action against the forces personnel who went berserk in the area.

A senior police official denied the allegations of ransacking of residential houses and damaging of public property. He claimed that forces did not resort to any kind of violence in the area.
