Aroma Mission: Awareness camp held for farmers

The farmers from Kupwara, Baramullah, Sopore and Bandipora attended the programme which was held under the National Aroma Mission, a statement here said.

CSIR- Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine Jammu in collaboration with SKUAST-K conducted awareness cum orientation programme regarding cultivation, processing and post harvest management of high value aromatic crops for farmers at government degree college, Sopore.

The farmers from Kupwara, Baramullah, Sopore and Bandipora attended the programme which was held under the National Aroma Mission, a statement here said.

Dr Qazi Parvaiz, Nodal Officer of the Aroma Mission pointed out that 8 lakh to 10 lakh plants of different aromatic crops were distributed under the mission till 2017 and the farmers are very enthusiastic to bring their holdings under the crops. “We have Karewas in parts of north Kashmir where we can cultivate such cash crops. The need of the hour is to shift our focus towards cultivation of aromatic crops.”

Dr Shahid Rasool Coordinator Aroma Mission said that global trade of these crops is 62 billion US $ and the trade in this sector is growing exponentially. “By 2050 the estimated global trade is expected to be $ 5 trillion.”

Dr Shahid while congratulating the Scientists of CSIR-IIIM lauded the role and efforts of Dr Ram Vishwakarma, Director CSIR-IIIM in the development of the aroma sector and his keen concern for the socio economic upliftment of the farmers  of the state.

The farmers participating in the programme were later taken to the project sites of Project K-5000 at Netnusa and Handwara for on-farm exposure.
