Clashes erupted between government forces and protesters after the former launched a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) in Heff village of Shopian district on Tuesday.

Reports said that youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones as soon as the CASO was launched.

The forces, according to eye witnesses, fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters, triggering further clashes.

Witnesses said that massive number of forces comprising personnel from police, army and CRPF cordoned off the village and house-to-house searches were launched.

Pertinently, three youth of the village, including Hizbul Mujahideen commander Saddam Padder, are active militants.

A police official said that a cordon and search operation was launched in the village following inputs about the presence of militants.

"It was a normal practice by the forces that concluded peacefully," he said.
