A group of farmers under the banner of All India JK Kissan Sabha held a protest at Press Colony on Monday  to highlight acute shortage of fertilizers being faced by them.

A statement issued by the Sabha said huge shortage of fertilizers is being felt especially in North Kashmir. The protesting farmers also stressed that “lakhs of tones of fertilizer has been left to rot at the Udhampur rake point. They said fertilizers that were to be brought to Kashmir in Feburary are still rotting in Udhampur. The farmers and growers also accused that no concerted measures have been made to carry out the dumped fertilizers to the Valley.

“Government is transporting wet fertilizers to Kashmir which are dangerous for our orchards. We request the government to stop inflow of substandard fertilizers to valley,” they said.

According to the Sabha the efforts of Agriculture Minister and Department to make Jammu Rake Point  operational is a welcome step so that companies can transport fertilizers to Kashmir “ as it was done last year for the timely availability of fertilizers in Kashmir,” the farmers said.

The protesting farmers accused various fertilizer dealers of creating misinformation about easy availability of fertilizers in Kashmir. “If these dealers claim that there is abundant supply of fertilizers then why is there so much of shortage,” they said.
